THE BEAUTIFUL SOPRANO
AND THE BEAUTIFL CONTRALTO
I've never been very fond of broadway music....well, I actually am irritated by it most of the time......it's the forced use of the chest register of the female voice, including extreme overtensing of the vocal muscles caused by singing high notes that should be produced in soprano register in the lower register that is like cat's claws on a blackboard to me........few broadway singers have the training or control in the contralto register and the tight-corded soprano voice just makes me want to flee.....the male tenor voices in broadway musicals does little to garner my enthusiastic support....that cutsey, teeny-faggy style of singing! when these voices sing together........i have to stuff my ears with cotton swabs! I remember, as a teenager, meeting Tallulah Bankhead who said that she "loosened" her vocal cords by standing at a canyon's edge and screaming for as long and loudly as she could, until her register dropped to it's now familiar voice.....i guess i like silk velvet stretched over the glass' edge........ it takes a singer like Kathryn Grayson to sing in a pure, effortless soprano voice that is the silverest bell......... Notice Frank Sinatra, in her audience....he knows good singing! and speaking of Frank....
