My century old mantle clock, on the half hour, makes exactly the same sound as the toaster oven when its timer 'goes off'.....the clock is 'saying' "time goes on"....the oven, 'take out the chow....it's ready!'.......Also, the annoying 'ding' that my cellphone makes when it 'just has to let me know it's gotten an update, a message or 'whatever' is the same sound that the freezer makes when its door is ajar.....There's the 'you left the key in the ignition' buzzer; the answering machine's 'you've got messages that you haven't heard yet beep; the 'you need to replace the air filter in the AC; the 'aren't you SURE that you don't want these updates to your computer beep; the 'get out of my way' car horns.......Well.....so many 'noises' that seem to pollute the otherwise beautiful morning that should be just the sounds of birds chirping, leaves flurrying in the breeze, the waterfall into the pond.......Oh, what's that dank bird call? It's the '20-something' next door, yelling at her boyfriend.....over her phone...'go inside, please.....you've scared the wrens away!' I'm slamming that 'attention seniors' incoming call........and, distracted by the washer's 'cycle is complete', I missed the toaster's 'the bagel is ready' AND the radio-controlled weather alert monitor's 'short beeps, until one presses the 'off' button', report on potential rain this afternoon..... and the under-the-tongue thermometer's informing that my 'internal temperature' reading is ready to 'see'.....What's that 'other' noise? .....the toilet valve needs a swap out No Wonder, why the average American scans the 'deeper issues'.....with all the distractions from 'knowing what's important'......Gotta go, the clock in the dining room's chiming.....it's 8 am, though my 'talking' watch is assuring me, in that "man's voice", "it's only '7'......"
